The story here starts with a montage of our main man, who smiles way more than any person should, to the point where I started to wonder if he is the serial killer. I have not yet finished the game, IвЂ™m about 3 hours in, but I wanted to give a quick review of the game so far, and my first impressions.

Games like that, and now The Plane Effect, I put in the horror adjacent genre, because while youвЂ™re not actively running from a serial killer or trying to survive a night in a haunted mansion, there is a special kind of spook factor that comes from cautiously exploring the bleak and lonely environments, and that feeling that someone is always watching you. вЂњInsideвЂќ was one of the first indie games I ever played, and it made me feelвЂ¦weird. IвЂ™m not a fan of horror games, but I do like being a little creeped out. But, the clunky gameplay and proliferation of bugs early on got me a little frustrated. TL DR-After 3 hours, I am invested in the story and dying to find out the rest. The story takes some weird sci-fi turns, and after almost 3 hours, I have an idea of whatвЂ™s going on, and only the faintest guess as to how it will end. Even the character animations seem haunting, almost Slenderman-esque with how our emaciated protagonist jaunts around. The coloration even is very similar, with a monochrome focus, but there are splashes of color here and there to spice things up.

The art and world-building are excellent, and IвЂ™m telling you, if you enjoyed Inside, I think youвЂ™ll enjoy The Plane Effect for how it gradually builds the world and opens you up to what is really happening. Players have the option to figure out puzzles step-by-step with no hints, or activate a little guidance on your impossible journey through вЂAssisted-ModeвЂ™. Navigate beautifully and elaborately designed, otherworldly environments and solve unusual puzzles to keep Solo moving through each area. Did it always take this long? Were the streets always a labyrinth? Where even is вЂњhomeвЂќ? All you know is that you must keep pushing ever onwards, you must keep going. As you progress through the dystopic cityscape, you quickly you realise all is not as it should be. Helpless over the cosmos, all you know is that you must return to your family, as soon as you can. ItвЂ™s your final day at the office, it is time to clock out and return home вЂ“ loomed over by a cosmic anomaly with an oppressive, otherworldly force. Curious to see more? Gameplay largely consists of puzzle-solving, but those who would rather enjoy the story and atmosphere can turn to an assist option to breeze through riddles faster.
